The objective is to minimize transportation costs. Our optimization model is a development of a model used in forestry transport that solves a general pick-up and delivery vehicle routing problem. To simulate the effects of various planning time windows and transportation time regulations and number of pick-up stops along each route, we have used data that represent one year of cattle transport. We have examined the benefits of using route optimization in cattle transportation planning. Both are highly dependent on efficient and qualitative transportation planning, which may be difficult if done manually. Time and the number of pick-up stops between farms and abattoirs are two key parameters for animal welfare. Animal transport is related to economic and environmental costs and a negative impact on animal welfare. The analysis of collection routes indicated potential for savings of more than 20% in time, for individual routes.Įach year, more than three million animals are transported from farms to abattoirs in Sweden. Time and distance of transport could be reduced through route optimisation. Queues before delivery and vehicle washing created problems, as reported by the drivers. Uneven distribution of delivery arrivals affected handling at the delivery gate. Data collection was carried out through truck-driver interviews activity registration on routes and at delivery, and slaughter chain activity registration. The operation considered involves loading, transporting and unloading animals and the slaughter chain from lairage box to cooling room for cattle carcasses. The objective of the current work was to describe the logistics chain of animal transport and abattoir operations in order to demonstrate potential effects of operations planning and route optimisation on animal welfare, meat quality and the environment. This necessitates the development of effective logistics systems, taking into consideration, road and traffic conditions, climate, transport time and distance, and queuing at delivery. ![]() ![]() Transport and handling of slaughter animals are associated with a series of stressful events for animals, compromising welfare and meat quality.
